Did
You Know? The
city of Sylvania was named for its profusion of trees. The heavily forested
location prompted adoption of the name Sylvania (from the Latin silvanus
or forest).Sylvania was founded in 1833 by Judge William Wilson and
General David White. During the
early years of Sylvania, the town served the farms and general residential
community with saw mills, tannery, barrel stave factory, grist mills,
livery stables and blacksmith shops as the center of rural life. Each Arbor
Day the community is involved in planting trees for the future and
Sylvania has proudly received the "Tree City U.S.A." award each
year since 1982. The first school, erected in 1834, served until 1844 when
the Old Stone Academy was built. Incorporated
into a village in 1867, Sylvania reached city status on January 1, 1961. |
