Did You Know?

Perrysburg was platted in 1816 by the Federal Government below the historical site of Fort Meigs on the Maumee River. The town was named for Oliver Hazzard Perry, the famous Commodore who won the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

The village became an important shipbuilding center and the third largest Great Lakes Port after Cleveland and Buffalo around the 1840's, but declined after Toledo and Detroit had become larger. In the early 1900's, Perrysburg prospered due to the building of the Toledo Interurban Railroad. Perrysburg established itself as a bedroom community. The development of the Interstate highway system in the 1950's and 1960's spurred more rapid growth in the area. Perrysburg became a city in 1960, with 5,519 residents. The Rossford Ordinance Depot in Perrysburg Township became the largest industrial park in Wood County. Chrysler and other companies were attracted to the area.

Since the 1970's, the area has grown at a rapid pace. Perrysburg stands poised for the future and is proud of its colorful past.
