Did You Know?

Waterville's long and rich history is associated with a large limestone outcropping in the middle of the Maumee River, known as Roche de Boeuf. Tradition identifies the small island as a meeting place for the Indians in the region. Little Turtle, Blue Jacket, Tarhe the Crane, and other war chiefs are said to have met there to plan their strategy against Anthony Wayne and his army.

John Pray settled in the area about 1818, establishing a trading post, grist mill and ultimately completing the Columbia House in 1828 (still operating as a restaurant). He founded the Village of Waterville in 1831.

The Miami-Erie Canal was started in the 1830's and the first boat, the Albert S. White, passed through Waterville in 1843. The canal operated until 1927. Much of the old canal became the Anthony Wayne Trail (U.S. route 24). A section of the canal still exists today and can be seen at Farnsworth Metropark.
