Background: Toledo, Ohio is a "big small town" with a diverse group of communities and neighborhoods.  Toledo is a city of approximately 308,000 residents (the metropolitan area population is roughly 609,900), the seat of Lucas County in northwestern Ohio, and the 55th largest city in the United States.

Each of these areas has its own set of communities, schools and major neighborhoods. Click on the map above to learn more about each individual community and their school systems.

Location: The Greater Toledo area is just one hour south of Detroit and Ann Arbor.  Chicago is three hours west of Toledo, Cleveland is two hours east, and Columbus is two and half hours south. With our wonderful central location, Toledo truly is in the "heart of it all."

College and Universities: The University of Toledo is located within the city limits of Toledo. Other colleges and universities within the area include University Medical Center, Lourdes College, Bowling Green State University, and Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. Community colleges include: Owens Community College, Davis College, Stautzenberger College, and Toledo Travel School.

Arts and Entertainment: The Greater Toledo area provides residents with an opportunity to enjoy the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Toledo Opera, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Toledo Zoo, COSI,  the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Toledo Botanical Garden, and concerts and other programs at the Stranahan and Valentine Theaters.   The Toledo Mudhens and the Toledo Storm offer sports enthusiasts access to professional baseball and hockey teams.   Hungry? Recreation: One major jewel in the Greater Toledo area recreation list is the Metroparks of Toledo Area.  Each of the nine Metroparks offers ample picnic areas, playfields, trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, interpretive information and natural beauty. Each also offers something that makes it unique.  

For amusement park enthusiasts, Cedar Point is an hour east  from Greater Toledo.

Did You Know?
The area around what is now Toledo was opened to pioneer settlement after the signing of the Treaty of Greenville.  The Greenville treaty was a consequence to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, a conflict between General Anthony Wayne and his Legion against the Confederated Tribes, fought in Monclova Township, Ohio (Southeast of what is now Toledo) in 1794.

The city of Toledo was founded after two villages, Port Lawrence and Vistula, were united in 1833 and named for Toledo, Spain.

Toledo's industrial development was spurred in the 1830's and '40s by the arrival of the railroads, the construction of the Wabash and Erie and Miami and Erie canals, and by the discovery of local deposits of gas and oil in 1844. Glassmaking (now a major industry) was introduced in the late 1880's by Edward Libbey and Michael Owens.

Today, Toledo is one of America's fifty largest cities and an integral part of the Midwestern economy. Toledo lies along Maumee Bay at the mouth of the Maumee River and is one of the most important ports of the Great Lakes. Its port, connected with the St. Lawrence Seaway, is one of the world's largest for bituminous coal shipping.

Major industries include glass, automobiles (notably Jeep), auto parts, petroleum, machinery, and tools.

Greater Toledo is in Ohio's ninth Congressional district, represented in the House of Representatives by Marcy Kaptur.
